Canyon Rims Recreation Area is a vast wilderness of public land located south of Moab, Utah, on the south and east borders of Canyonlands National Park. Canyon Rims is a high plateau of sandstone benchlands lying at the foot of the La Sal Mountains, soaring high above the shimmering abyss of Canyonlands. On a clear day you can see horizons beckoning from almost 100 miles away.

The beautiful vertical landscape is carved from ancient sandstone layers that formed in swamps and deserts and ocean floors over hundreds of millions of years. The exposed geology cuts from the Morrison Formation all the way down to the Paradox Formation at the bottom of the Colorado Plateau. The ancient environments are exposed briefly once more to the light of the sun as they erode slowly down to the sea.

Although located relatively close to Moab, Canyon Rims is one of the most remote places in North America. Visitation statistics have been rising for decades, but compared to other popular area destinations such as Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, Canyon Rims still feels extremely isolated.

There are several campgrounds that are open all year. Scenic overlooks on paved roads provide year-round access to low-clearance vehicles. Four wheelers and bicyclists may explore the area's miles of empty dirt roads; there are plenty of trails for hikers and backpackers to explore on foot.

Location: The main entrance road is located 32 miles south of Moab on Hwy 191. It is signed: "Needles Overlook and Anticline Overlook."
