About this Item

"Sacred Images: A Vision of Native American Rock Art" brings together the talents of four Utah wilderness photographers and the storytelling skills of its indigenous peoples to present the visionary power of Utah's rock art. This book of magnificent photographs and insightful text is the next best thing to hiking the great canyons of Utah. Master photographers Craig Law, John Telford, Tom Till, and Philip Hyde reveal prehistoric and historic rock art images as they stand on boulders, cliff faces, and overhangs throughout Utah. The wonderful text by Leslie Kelen, David Sucec and an introduction by N. Scott Momaday give insight to cultural styles and history.

Whether pecked or painted on stone, at least four distinct styles of rock art can be seen in Utah;  Hisatsenom/Anasazi, Fremont and Ute including the oldest documented Barrier Canyon style - representing an art-making tradition with a time span of at least 8,000 years. Momaday describes these earliest images as "the beginning of art in America and the origin of American literature.  Sites included are from Canyonlands National Park and the Moab area, the San Rafael Swell, Nine Mile Canyon, Horseshoe Canyon and the Uinta Basin.

Wonderful Photographs by Well Known Photographic Artists

This book has wonderful photos of Utah Indian Rock art. However, don't look for this as source book to lead you to these wonderful places. Only general descriptions like "eastern Canyonlands Area" are given as a location. You'll need considerable research to locate the exact position of the rock art to get to the actual location. If you're looking for pictures of Utah Rock art, this book is for you. If you want to actually see the art you'll need several more references and I'd say skip this book for one with specific directions.
