Moab Weather

Moab is located in Utah’s arid high desert region which receives an average of only about 10 inches of precipitation per year (except in the nearby mountains). When it does rain, the area often becomes a land of rainbows and waterfalls!

The weather is sunny much of the time, but at 4,000 ft elevation (1,219 m), the sun can be quite intense.

  • Protect yourself from the sun with a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
  • Wear layers as temperatures can sometimes fluctuate as much as 40° in a single day.
  • Always take lots of water with you as you explore and enjoy this amazing area!

Spring and Fall

Spring and fall offer the most moderate weather with daytime highs averaging 60-80° F (16-26° C) and lows average 30-50° F (-1 to -10 C). These seasons are also the busiest.

Summers

Summers are hot with temperatures often exceeding 100° F (38° C). Plan outdoor activities for the cooler mornings and evenings, and less strenuous activities for the middle of the day. Here’s a tip: If it is hot in the Moab Valley, it is generally 10-20 degrees cooler at the higher elevations of the mesa tops like Canyonlands Island in the Sky. The La Sal Mountains also offer a cool refuge during hot weather.

Winters

Winters are cold, with highs averaging 30-50° F (-1 to -10 C), and lows averaging 0-20° F (-17 to -7° C). Large snowfalls are uncommon (except in nearby mountains), but even small amounts of snow or ice can make local trails and roads impassable.
