Elk Ridge area

The uplands of the Abajo Mountains and adjacent Elk Ridge on the Manti-La Sal National Forest are an alpine island in the desert. They are a refuge of cooler summer temperatures, higher snow and rainfall, and has plant communities not available at lower elevations. Past fluctuations in temperature and precipitation opened the door to ancient farming peoples, who migrate into these uplands during periods of both climatic and social opportunity.
