San Juan River

The San Juan Rivers flows through the Colorado Plateau touching portions of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. The lower San Juan River passes through a desert environment where vegetation is sparse at best and rock dominates the arid landscapes.

The river way is abundant with spectacular geology as well as a rich heritage of Ancestral Puebloan cultural and mixture of Native American and early Anglo history.

The Bureau of Land Management, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and Goose Neck State Reserve manage most of the river-way corridor. There are multiple opportunities for launch and take-out sites. The three sites most frequently used in the region with a proximity to the Four Corners area are Sand Island, Mexican Hat and Clay Hills Crossing.
